NY Democrats ask Public Campaign Finance Board to halt Blakeman matching funds; no board action reported

The state Democratic Party filed an Oct. 7 complaint with the Public Campaign Finance Board and the Division of Election Law Enforcement asking officials to withhold further matching funds from Blakeman while contribution claims are reviewed. It cites a Sept. 29 NY Focus analysis of more than $860,000 in matches requested on over 2,600 apparently ineligible contributions. These are allegations, not findings; the campaign has said it corrected errors through amended reports, and no board decision or suspension was reported.

NYS Focus reports that about 10 percent of contributions Blakeman submitted for public matching were marked eligible despite problems: over 1,900 from donors outside New York (400+ from Florida and Texas) and over 500 above the $1,050 individual limit. The campaign says errors were corrected in amended reports; NYS Focus found the latest versions still include match requests for thousands of ineligible donations. Blakeman had received nearly $2M in matching funds as of July, and it is not clear whether any ineligible donations were matched. The Public Campaign Finance Board says staff audit all claims before paying and can recover funds.

These are campaign-announced totals; itemized donors and amounts will appear in the pre-general BOE filing. Blakeman comparison figures not included in the report.

Strong and Safe New York launches a $250,000 billboard campaign on highways leading out of the state ("You Are Now Leaving NY (Like Everyone Else)") promoting Blakeman and blaming Hochul for population loss; still no full donor roster for the Dolan-backed super PAC

The pro-Blakeman independent-expenditure committee Strong and Safe New York, whose identified funders are James Dolan-linked MSG entities, put roughly $250,000 into billboards placed near the Outerbridge Crossing, the George Washington Bridge, I-287 in Rockland, I-84 near Pennsylvania, routes east of Albany toward Massachusetts and roads near the Canadian border. The message ties New York's population decline to taxes, energy costs and state policy and revives Hochul's 2022 "jump on a bus and head down to Florida" remark. The $250,000 is a reported campaign cost, not a filed expenditure; the PAC has not disclosed total receipts or a full donor list, and the next mandatory window is the 24-hour super PAC reporting period opening Oct. 4. Blakeman amplified the theme on X on Sept. 4 ("Hundreds of thousands have fled Hochul's unaffordable New York").

Frank Lautenberg, confirmed she plans to host a fundraiser for Bruce Blakeman. State records show she gave $1,000 to Hochul's reelection campaign in July 2025; federal filings show hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates and causes over the past decade, including Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton. Lautenberg gave the Post a one-line explanation, personal friendship with Blakeman, and no policy reason. The fundraiser date and any dollar figure raised have not been reported; no BOE itemization tied to the event has been found as of Sept 13.
