Stony Brook and Brookhaven send quantum information 13 miles through open air, a first for the state network

Announced Aug 21 (Albany). Researchers at SUNY Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Laboratory transmitted photons carrying quantum information 13 miles through open air, from Stony Brook's Quantum Watchtower to Brookhaven's Quantum Lighthouse in Upton — a free-space optical link that adds a wireless component to a fiber network the state says already spans 161 miles and eight nodes across Long Island and the NYC metro area. A third facility is under development at Yale. Builds on the $300M state investment announced last year in Stony Brook's Quantum Research and Innovation Hub, and is separate from the $60M Regional Quantum Technology Commercialization Hubs RFP logged Aug 13.
