Office of Immigrant Trust opens first enforcement action: 12 agencies — including Nassau — told to end ICE 287(g) agreements by Aug. 25

Hochul and AG James announced Jul 24 that the new Office of Immigrant Trust — a bureau inside the AG's office created by the package Hochul signed May 27 — sent letters to the 12 local law enforcement agencies with active 287(g) ICE agreements, notifying them state law requires the agreements be unwound by Aug. 25, 2026. The Local Cops, Local Crimes Act bans formal or informal 287(g) arrangements and bars local facilities from housing federal civil immigration detainees. Counties with agreements include Nassau, Broome, Madison, Rensselaer and Steuben. OIT can issue subpoenas, investigate and bring civil actions.

Blakeman won't say whether Nassau will comply with 287(g) wind-down order; lawyers reviewing, written response promised by Aug. 14

After the AG's Office of Immigrant Trust ordered Nassau to unwind its 287(g) agreement by Aug. 25, Blakeman said county police and sheriff's department lawyers are reviewing the law and the letter, with a written response due by Aug. 14. He has taken no action to change the agreement and says other county officials with similar deals are exploring separate legal options. Blakeman vowed in May to defy the state limits ("make my day"). Sets up a direct legal collision between the sitting governor and her challenger in his own county weeks before early voting.

Hochul demands DHS answers on three planned ICE detention sites in New York

In a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin dated July 12, Hochul demanded answers on reports of three federal immigration detention projects planned in New York — a Rochester building that houses a daycare and federal court, plus sites in Batavia and Newburgh — accusing DHS of "secrecy, evasion and contempt for communities and the rule of law." Reported July 13 by amNY and Spectrum.
