Hochul eliminates mandatory fees for more than 7,500 SUNY graduate student workers
Announced Aug 21 (Albany). Mandatory fees averaging about $2,000 a year are eliminated for more than 7,500 graduate student workers at SUNY State-operated campuses, completing a four-year phase-out funded through enacted state budgets since FY2023-24. Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky, who introduced the bill version in 2021 and chairs Senate Higher Education, noted graduate assistants were billed roughly $2,000 in fees against stipends of about $20,000. CWA Local 1104 and CWA District 1 credited years of bargaining and Albany advocacy. Assemblymember Alicia Hyndman and bill sponsor Assemblymember Solages also cited.
