Hochul and James release final SAFE for Kids Act rules restricting addictive feeds and overnight notifications for minors
Final rules under the 2024 SAFE for Kids Act, announced Jul 28 at a NYC roundtable with parents and teens, publish in the State Register Jul 29; the law takes effect 180 days later, Jan 25, 2027. Platforms must not serve algorithmically personalized feeds to users under 18 or send notifications between midnight and 6 a.m. without parental consent. Rules set criteria for which companies are covered and standards for age verification and parental consent. AG can seek civil penalties up to $5,000 per violation.
