Hochul appoints AG Letitia James special prosecutor in Cornell alleged gang-rape case after saying she lost faith in the Tompkins County DA; James says her office is treating it as a criminal investigation

Announced Oct. 1 after Tompkins County DA Matthew Van Houten said on Sept. 28 that the woman never stated she was raped. Hochul cited discrepancies between his statements and the woman's account to police. Cornell said Sept. 30 it would hire outside counsel for an independent probe.
