Researchers at SUNY Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Laboratory transmitted photons carrying quantum information 13 miles through open air, from Stony Brook's Quantum Watchtower to Brookhaven's Quantum Lighthouse in Upton — a free-space optical link that adds a wireless component to a fiber network the state says already spans 161 miles and eight nodes across Long Island and the NYC metro area. A third facility is under development at Yale. Builds on the $300M state investment announced last year in Stony Brook's Quantum Research and Innovation Hub, and is separate from the $60M Regional Quantum Technology Commercialization Hubs RFP logged Aug 13.
