Medical Aid in Dying law takes effect Aug. 5 as courts split: Catholic plaintiffs win consent injunction, disability-rights suit dismissed

New York's Medical Aid in Dying law, signed by Hochul on Dec. 17, 2025 after more than a decade of legislative debate, takes effect Wednesday, Aug. 5. Two court rulings landed this week: the state agreed to a temporary injunction and restraining order exempting the Catholic plaintiffs — four orders of religious nuns, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, and other Catholic facilities — from complying while their First Amendment suit proceeds (order applies only to parties in the case). Separately, a federal judge on Thursday dismissed a suit from individual plaintiffs and disability-rights advocates alleging ADA violations, finding they lacked standing. Under the law, patients with six months or less to live can obtain life-ending medication after meeting statutory conditions.
